When the third Vienna goal slipped softly into the net on this cool November Saturday, I watched the last breath of hope escape from my tired team's collective chest. Throughout the season they had battled through injuries, but now they were simply worn out. They went on to lose this one, 4-1, to a team that they should normally easily beat. But, so what? There is so much for us to appreciate and savor.

Here is my list this year (and always):

1. I am thankful that Tim Marshall's injury was not worse. My heart still races when I think about that moment. He has come back so wonderfully without any apparent after effects. That fact makes everything else pale in comparison.

011
Vienna 1134
Captains: C. Giangi, J. Weeks
Game Balls: A. Babilonia, B. Colan, C. Giangi, S. Porter, T. Marshall, T. Soukup
Goals: T. Marshall
Assists:

A banged up Viper team simply ran out of gas to end the season. But who cares? There is so much for us to appreciate.

Scoring:
Vienna 1, at 25m
Vienna 1, at 35m
Vipers, T. Marshall at 40m
Vienna 1, at 46m
Vienna 1, at 52m
2. I am thankful that my players enjoy the game. While we had a couple of moments this year that I would like take back--ones in which a player or two lost their cools--99.9% of the time the Vipers are models of sportsmanship and sport. I am honored to be around them.

3. I am thankful that for ten years you have allowed Sally and me to be a part of your lives. I have known some of you a lot longer than others, yet each one of you has earned a special place in my memory and in my heart. You are the sons I never had, and I hope one day to watch you get the same enjoyment from the sons and daughters in your lives.

4. I am thankful that being part of your lives has allowed Sally and me to be a part of your families' lives. We treasure the relationships we have made with all of your moms, dads, brothers, and sisters. I would not know SpongeBob without Mark Whiteman. I would never doubt my coaching ability without Andy Marshall. I would not know how cool it is to coach girls without Joanna Weeks.

5. I am thankful to have such a great wife who never knew soccer until she met me and now, through you, she has come to love it as much as I do. You see, I already knew that the joy of soccer wasn't in the "what" it was in the "who." She knows that now, too. We have built our fall and spring lives around the Vipers and neither one of us would trade that choice for anything. We would do it all again if we could.

Every Thanksgiving when I gather with my family we each take a moment to say what we are thankful for. This year, I will say that I am most thankful for the Vipers. From humble beginnings tongue-catching snowflakes on the Fox Ridge park field, great human beings have arisen. Those tiny people in the red and black stripes have become strong, confident, powerful and elegant sportsmen in white jerseys and mismatched socks.

To John W. and Chris G., I say thank you for being the founders. To Tim, Travis, Trey, Brad, and Jordan, I say thank you for being the foundation that has sustained us. To all of you, from Chris G. to Chris H. (in order of appearance) I say thank you for playing on.

I am privileged and thankful to have been your coach.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Chas
