Vipers Earn Gritty Victory

On another gorgeous spring day--this one perhaps more perfect than the first one--the Vipers took the field a little short on players and a little short on good health. Missing from the roster was starting keeper John Weeks, injured striker Tim Marshall, stalwart back Brian Colan, steady stopper Andrew Babilonia, newcomer Sean Jenkins, and the irreplaceable Trey Whiteman. This list fails to mention the health of the players that were there--many of them had logged two tough varsity matches earlier in the week.

Bobby Doyle breaks down the field against SpringfieldDespite the close score, however, the team banded together to secure the second straight victory of the season. Springfield 1 was a game opponent. They hustled, battled, and fought throughout the match, but the outcome simply was never in doubt. Were it not for the excellent Springfield defense, the score would have been much more one-sided.

Once again, the entire first half was played in the Vipers' offensive end.
Chris Giangi, Chris Hudspeth, Bobby Doyle, Sam Porter, and Kevin Hart all had good chances in the first 40 minutes, but did not quite connect. The Red & Black connecting passes were sublime, yet the pace of the action was not quite what the team is capable of--probably due again to the stress and strain of varsity soccer.

With some of their stars out or banged up, the Vipers travelled to Springfield and survived a hard-fought match, 2-0. The victory wasn't pretty, but it was well-earned.

Scoring:
Vipers, T. Dezendorf at 55m from K. Hart, C. Hudspeth
Vipers, B. Doyle at 75m
Martin Lees and Jordan Stanbridge again shared the net-minding duties, and again they were both excellent. Neither one was challenged severely, but they made the plays they needed to make and restarted play perfectly. Both players also contributed heavily to the defense that has now given up only one goal in two games.

Speaking of defense, it bent but did not break on this day.
Tony Soukup again was outstanding at sweeper, and he was the constant. He was ably assisted by John Thomas, John Beerman, Brad Johnson, and even Giangi, who moved into the back to solidify the team.

As with the previous game, the first twenty minutes of the second half were key. The Vipers can't count on things working out this way every week, but when you're a little down it's okay to win with a surge of effort rather than a constant one. In the 55th minute, midfielder
Travis Dezendorf broke the ice with an excellent shot from about twenty-five yards out after Hudspeth and Hart had fired shots that rebounded away. That goal was enough for the victory, but Doyle added insurance late in the match when he slotted home a goal from a very tough angle.

All in all, an excellent result for a team that was hurting a bit and had traveled afar. The boys will be back on this field again in two weeks for another tough match in Springfield.
