Spring 2005 - Game 4
Out of Gas, Not Out of Spirit

On the first hot day of a long, cool spring, the Vipers lost to a team they could clearly beat on any other day. But the demands of the varsity seasons are taking their toll. With some players not even at the game due to injury and fatigue, and others willing themselves through this match, Herndon emerged the victor, 2-0.

It was tough to watch Herndon shuffling six players in as substitutes while our boys played the entire match. That might have been the key to this one. By the time the second goal was scored the Red & Black simply had no reserves--additional players or additional gas--to draw on.

Every player that made the match deserved a game ball, starting with Tim Marshall, Trey Whiteman, and Brian Colan who hobbled through much of the game on a sore hip, a sore foot, and a sore knee/foot combination (in that order). Sean Jenkins and John Beerman both had their best games as Vipers, while Tony Soukup, John Thomas, Sam Porter, John Weeks, Chris Hudspeth, Chris Giangi, and Andrew Babilonia had their typical excellent matches.

Things will go better for the team, but nothing impresses a coach more than to see his players trying so hard with every ounce of energy--however limited--that they have.
