The Vipers came out ready to play on this day. After
a disappointing loss and a forfeit the previous weekend, they needed to
get back on the winning track. They also knew that it would be tough to
accomplish that task against another very good Herndon team.
Adding to their worries was the absence of Tim Marshall, Tony
Soukup, Kevin Hart, and Martin Lees who were nursing
varsity injuries. This game would be tough to win regardless, but losing
these key players would make it that much harder. In an effort to
jumpstart the team, they were given "throwback" Viper uniforms to wear
as a reminder of the great accomplishments this group of young men had
achieved together.The match started out
typically with the Red & Black controlling the play. The midfield of
Bobby Doyle, Trey Whiteman, Travis Dezendorf, John
Thomas,
John
Beerman, and Sam Porter was especially effective moving the
ball around at will and working in for some excellent chances for
Chris Giangi and Chris Hudspeth behind the Herndon defense.
Had the team been able to connect on an early opportunity they might
have had the energy to persevere on this hot afternoon.

The Vipers showed signs of life as they battled through the first half, yet Herndon's attack proved too much for the team and the Vipers lost, 5-1.

But the Viper advantage did not last long, and
Herndon scored first and often gaining five goals to the Vipers one. The
makeshift defense of Brad Johnson, Andrew Babilonia,
Sean
Jenkins, Brian Colan, and Jordan Stanbridge really
played well throughout the game, but it wasn't enough. Each of these
players is strong by themselves, yet against a team this good starting a
group that had never played together before was something the team would
choose not to do. Even when Soukup valiantly came in to his sweeper
spot, and even with the excellent play of keeper John Weeks, the
Herndon attack pulled apart the Viper defense.
In earlier seasons, we would have called this one a character builder.
Now it's just a game that we'd rather do over. On another day, the
result could have been very different. On another day, we'd all be
celebrating a Viper victory. Those days will come again soon enough.
