On a beautiful, crisp, clear spring day our boys
ventured on to their home field for the last time. I have lost count
now, but they had probably done this 100 or more times in the last ten
years. It is time to take the Viper banner down and wish the fields of
Loudoun County well.
Farewell
Fox
Ridge Park, home of the Vipers inaugural seasons. I will remember
you for a cold winter-like match when James Lake took his shirt off and
shivered while we tried to get a sweatshirt on him. I will remember you
also because that's where the first Viper practices were ever held and
where players found joy in catching snowflakes on their tongues. I will
remember cleat after untied cleat. I will
remember you because that's where the team name originated.
Farewell
Simpson
Middle School, home to more Viper games than any other field. I will
remember you for the early evening collision between Tim Marshall and
Chris Whiteman. I will remember you for "bring it on, ladies."
You taught "Lefty" how to kick with his other foot. I will
remember you for Trey Whiteman's hat-trick and Chris Giangi's
left-footed hat-trick. I will remember you for water fights, mini-camp,
the night we replaced the net, and Ace's one goal per season streak. I
will remember you for a rainy evening with Weeksy, Anthony, Tim, and
Travis where we played until we could play no more. I will remember you
for the last Viper practice ever.
Farewell
Mills
Field in Ashburn. I will remember you because that's where we became
the Red & Black for good. Those striped uniforms were the best ever. I
will remember you for the only undefeated season in Viper history. I
will remember you for the best-played Viper game ever from beginning to
end (championship 4-1 match vs. Little River). I will remember you for
the "butt thing" as demonstrated by my friend, Doug Greenlaw. I will
remember you because on your turf I began to think that we had something
special going--and that it would last a long time.

Farewell
Fincastle
Field. We only had one or two games on your grounds. I will remember
you because that's where Jesse Saunders almost fainted during a
pre-season drill. I will remember you because of the way his friends
took care of him to make sure he was okay. I knew that they had the
right attitude about soccer then because nothing else mattered except
Jesse. Oh, and the ensuing water fight.
Farewell
Ida
Lee Park, home of the Vipers' final seasons. I will remember you for
your beauty and your part in making this a beautiful game. I will
remember you for the pride I felt as I watched my growing/maturing
players warm up on your wonderfully manicured pitch. I will remember you
because that's where John Weeks began displaying the form of a truly
outstanding and skilled keeper. I will remember you because on your
sidelines I officially became shorter than most of my players. I will
remember you because that's where these children became men.

You are each a part of our history, and your names bring back indelibly
etched moments for me. Brad Johnson walked on to the Sunshine Farms
field in orange socks to join the Vipers. At Evergreen, I met Tony Soukup and knew that he
was something special. At Hencken, I watched an all star team led mostly
by Vipers win a muddy championship. At the Leesburg Annex, I officially
welcomed Sam Porter to the team. At Harmony, I witnessed one of the most
satisfying wins ever over a hungry Cannon team. The list is
never-ending. At least I hope so.
You were our home, Loudoun County fields, for ten
years and we love you for it. We planted our banner on your grass, and
your turf supported our children's legs as those legs gradually grew to
sturdily support an outstanding group of men who each stand on their own
and who stood together as a team. Fifty-eight of them to be exact.
We had fun. We played hard. We got better. We won
some games. We had more fun.
We played on.
That's what it was always about.
