It was the last game of the last regular season ever. We were playing a team we had played many times before. They were good. We were better. We won 3-2, when Bobby Doyle came out of his slump and blistered the net for the victory. Games don't get much more satisfying than that one, and you have to remember them when they end like that.

Several years ago when the young Vipers had their first undefeated season, I told them to remember that moment in time because unbeaten seasons don't happen very often. In fact, it never happened again for the Red & Black, which proves just how special that season really was. I think the boys were too young to know how rare that season was, but maybe they appreciate it more now that our time together is ending. We had some great seasons, but that one stands alone.

I don't know all of the words to the song by Green Day, but I do know that it's about remembering the time of your life. The song says that the greatest things are unpredictable and should be remembered for their quality and meaning. I always tried to express this idea to the Vipers. I know that they will remember the Viper era fondly, and that they will appreciate the experiences we have had together later in their lives. We couldn't have predicted this from the beginning, and oh what a great time it has been.

These last few weeks, I have grown sentimental on the sidelines as I've watched the last home game, the last regular season game, the last tournament, the last goal, and the last whistle. You see, it has not only been the time of their lives.

It has been the time of my life.

What great memories I have. What fun I had at all of our practices, and all of our games. I can't remember a single time that I wasn't happy while with my boys on the soccer field. But I can remember so many times when other parts of my life weren't going as well. I could always count on the soccer field as my sanctuary. I could always count on my Viper friends and their families for friendship and support.

You have given me thanks time and time again for what I consider a labor of love. Now it's time for me to thank you for adding so much enjoyment to my life. Vipers, I will miss you as you head off to college and to new phases of your lives. I hope we stay in touch, and that some day I will watch children and teams of your own from the soccer sidelines.

It has been an absolute pleasure. The time of my life.
