Spring 2009 - Game 1
It's Not Going to Be Easy
We didn't know quite what to expect in Division 2. Now we know. The teams are going to be a little tougher, a little faster, a bit stronger. In general, they're going to be better.

On this opening day of the Spring 2009 campaign, the Avalanche entered the game riding an eight-game unbeaten streak in regular season play. And from the outset, the Avalanche put excellent pressure on the Shockwave defense.
The first half clearly belonged to our girls with Emily and Holly flashing through centrally while Allyson, Taylor and Steph crashed from the outside. It looked like it was going to be a really good day. Alyssa did everything she could to get the Avalanche out in front, too.
Sammy and Tyla were relentless from the middle, and two or three of their truly excellent shots just barely missed going in. About fifteen minutes into the game it should have been Avalanche something and Shockwave nothing. But it wasn't.
The defense held together very well. Ashley, Anna, Goose, Dana, Nicole, and JPeg really did their jobs as expected. Keepers Kaitlyn and Shelby were rock solid, too, for nearly the entire match. But that one break for the Shockwave was the game's difference.
So, why weren't the Avalanche scoring more? Well, for this match we're going to have to attribute that to a truly excellent visiting defense. It seemed like every light blue pass was deflected by dark blue feet and every good shot was blocked at the last second.
In other words, the Avalanche played a good game. Good enough to win--last season. The most important lesson we learned on this day is that being that good isn't going to be quite good enough. Last season we WON six games by one goal, Division 2 means that with the same effort we might LOSE games by one goal.
Having said that, there is no doubt that this team is going to be up for the challenge. In future games, look for improvements from the team in a number of areas including: flatter passes through the defense; less dribbling and more "give and go,"; better organization in the back; and, of course, more consistent finishing.

And, so, we've created our own challenge right from the start. In the competitive cauldron that is travel soccer, we'll need to get back on track right away.
I have never been a part of a team with more resilience so I believe that a week from today we'll be there. Two games this coming weekend will help us show our true capability. Watch closely.
Think snow!
