Spring 2009 - Game 2
And the Heat Goes On
So the Avalanche had a few things to overcome going into this game: a season-opening loss, a short bench, an excellent opponent. Oh, and who turned up the heat?

It's not supposed to be this hot for the second game of the spring season. And it didn't help that the team in light blue had not had a single practice in hot weather. The night before had really been the only time the team was able to go without warmup suits and sweatshirts. However, there was a game to be played this morning, and the team that lets the heat get to them is surely the team that will have a tougher time.
As in the first game of the season, the Avalanche was the stronger side in the first half. The difference this time was that the team finished their scoring chances. Against good defenses like the Arenal squad, goals will be hard to get, yet Allyson and Kaitlyn both tallied for the Avs to give the team a commanding lead after thirty-five minutes. And that was just what we needed.
The best way to describe the Avalanche defense today was that they weathered the weather and the storm.
The weather was the heat, and the storm was the furious second half rally brought on by the Arsenal. Ashley and Anna--amazingly--played the entire game and hung in there just strong enough and just long enough to keep the team in position to win.
On the outside JPeg, Goose, and Dana held firmly to their positions while facing continuous pressure throughout the game. Yet under all this intensity, and to their credit, only one late Arsenal tally would crease the net.
It's apparent that the team will have to get better at playing high balls launched by the opposing keeper. As all of the teams get stronger, keepers are putting the ball into play at the midfield stripe and beyond. Letting that ball bounce and then trying to play it quickly is often tough to do. Expect to see more heading from our defenders as the season progresses.
It has also become clear now that our girls will have to be more productive offensively to do well this season. Therefore, we'll continue to look for combinations that work well together and produce scores.
On this day the goals came from Allyson and Kaitlyn, yet Shelby, Holly, Emily, and Steph all put themselves in position to make a difference in the attack. A great second half rally , led by Taylor, almost put the game out of reach for good and included shots from just about every forward and midfielder.

And, finally, I have to give a special tribute to our terrific central midfielders. Both Tyla and Sammy played all but a few minutes in the most demanding of positions and surely and easily controlled the central portion of the field. In two seasons, I have yet to see a team with a pair of halfbacks of such caliber playing together.
And tomorrow we get to go right back out there.
Think snow!
