2009 Virginian - Game 4
Out of Gas, Not Out of Heart

At our team meeting after this morning's game we made the usual round of comments. I ask the girls what they thought of the match, and I encourage them to be frank, honest, and critical. We always end with positives, but we do talk about some not so great things--especially after we don't play as well as we can. The day before, after two tough losses, there was a lot to talk about.

Avalanche101
DAM Timberwolves ()112
Captains: Kaitlyn F., Shelby H.
Game Balls: Alyssa H., Allyson S., Emily G., Jenny P.
Goals: Allyson S.
Assists: Sammy B.

As a tough tournament ends, the Avalanche suffers a third defeat but remains standing tall.

Scoring:
Avalanche, Allyson S. at 17m from Sammy B.
DAM Timberwolves, at 24m
DAM Timberwolves, at 40m
So, when I said, "Who has something to say?" Sammy was the first to raise her hand. "I think we got our team back.", she said, and I could not have said it better. The team we have come to love and expect finally and fully showed up to play this match against the Arsenal, the eventual division champions. Yes, the Arsenal had a couple of golden opportunities go wanting, but we made ours when it was available to us and the Avalanche was redeemed.

The second match of the day did not result in a victory, but the team played solidly against a very good WAGS team from Maryland.

While the tournament, in the end, did not go the way we had hoped, the team played through the tough spots together and that is a success in and of itself. Our record wasn't great, but all four matches were decided by one goal. We were in it all the way.

Sixteen girls, one team.

DAM Timberwolves 2 - Avalanche 1
Out of Gas, Not Out of Heart
On a different day, when there was more energy available, the Avalanche can compete and win against teams like the Timberwolves. But, at the end of a long tournament, they were just a little too much. You could see the team sagging back and not having the legs left to make one final push. The girls played well, and even had the lead for a short time, but the Timberwolves got it back and kept it for the win. Standouts in this match were: Allyson, Emily, Alyssa, and JPeg.

Avalanche 1 - SYA Arsenal 0
Taylor Comes Up Large
The Arsenal had already clinched first place in the tournament division and was brimming with confidence. The Avalanche was in last place and struggling to believe in themselves. Turns out that circumstance was just what the team needed. From the opening kickoff the Avalanche played like a different team. Passing was good, hustle was even better, defense was coordinated and steady. Taylor finishes a crossing pass perfectly. We win. Excellent. Standouts in this match were: Taylor, Ashley, Kaitlyn, and Steph.

VYS Freedom 1 - Avalanche 0
One Goal Makes a Difference
The Freedom had lost their first match, too, and were hungry for a victory just like the Avalanche. Only the freedom seemed slightly more hungry. On a hot afternoon, the Avas struggled to find one open door, but the opposing defense would not yield. Finally, a beautiful long shot from just outside the eighteen creased the Avalanche goal line for the Freedom win. A very tough loss ends a very tough day. Standouts in this match were: Anna, Goose, Shelby, and JPeg.

CYA Rumble 3 - Avalanche 2
A Great Comeback Falls Short
Against the Rumble the Avalanche has always competed well, and this game, in the end, was no exception. It was the beginning that was tough. In an unprecedented turn of events, the girls in light blue gave up three goals in the first eightteen minutes of the match. The Avs battled back scoring one goal before half time and one more mid-way through the second half, but they couldn't quite find the third one despite their best efforts. Standouts in this match were: Tyla, Holly, Sammy, and Nicole.

Think snow!
