Spring 2009 - Game 6
The Avalanche is Back

Previous Matches v SYA Arsenal
4/25/2009 Avalanche 2 - SYA Arsenal 1
5/24/2009 Avalanche 1 - SYA Arsenal 0
Seventy-five percent of the way into the season we have a great record once again. But until today we hadn't had a signature game. Sure we have had some very good matches, including exciting comebacks against the Lightning and the Thunder, but we were looking for a thorough, complete victory that said the Avalanche deserved a ranking at the top of the division table.

We got one today. And it was HUGE.

Since the third game of the season the girls in light blue had been right there at the top, but it has been nip and tuck with tough games throughout the schedule and no room for error. Today, though, the Avs put their stamp on the season by beating the SYA Arsenal--a very tough opponent--for the third time in a row.

In a rare occurrence, the team got three goals well before the first half ended. Anna, Allyson, and Steph, each tallied on picture perfect shots, and the team never really looked back after that. Yes, the Arsenal had the ball in their offensive end during much of the second half, but the victory was secured early.

Ashley and Anna, both under the weather during the Virginian tournament, were once again their superb selves. And their defensive mates Dana, Goose, and Nicole were just plain great. All three young backs took the team's new "delay" tactics to heart, which really slowed the Arsenal attack to a crawl. Goose, in particular, had perhaps her best game as an Avalanche. What a performance by the back five!

And they could not have done it without the scintillating efforts of keeper Kaitlyn, who played the whole match in goal due to Shelby's absence. The ever-improving keeper made numerous saves, and her decision-making was flawless. Her punts and throws got the team out of the defensive third especially during the intense second half, when the Arsenal cranked up their attack.

The midfield was equally impressive and produced a dominating performance. Sammy, as usual, was brilliant and made several of her patented right side runs ending in great crosses. Just like the defensive group, the midfield is taking on a personality of its own with consistent outstanding play from Tyla, JPeg, and Allyson. Each girl contributed on offense and defense, the most demanding aspect of this demanding position.

And last, but certainly not least, the Avalanche attack was excellent, too. Statistics will show that the Arsenal actually took more shots than the Avs, but they won't show the quality of the attempts by Emily, Alyssa, Holly, Taylor, Steph, and Allyson.

Even the girls themselves might not have realized that the three goals were the result of the first five shots. You just don't often get a 60% scoring percentage in travel soccer. That's how impressive the offense was today.

Finally, if you look at this story closely you'll notice little soccer balls next to each girl's name. Usually, I try to pick three players who had outstanding games in a particular match. Today, every single girl contributed to a big and important win. At any given time, one of them was doing something spectacular. What a match. One more win--in our last two games--and its on to Division 1.

Think snow!
