Spring 2009 - Game 8
A Finishing Touch

Previous Matches v MCLN Fury
11/2/2008 Avalanche 1 - MCLN Fury 0
Just a few months ago, I would have said that the biggest weakness on the Avalanche is that the team couldn't finish its chances. We spent the winter working on it, and the focus of many practices has been on crossing to the middle, following shots, and striking the ball hard. It is a weakness no longer.

Captains: Jenny P., Nicole B.
Game Balls: Alyssa H., Holly J., Shelby H.
Goals: Kaitlyn F., Stephanie D., Shelby H.
Assists: Anna F., Holly J.

The Avalanche wins the final match of the spring because they know how to finish games and seasons.

Scoring:
Avalanche, Shelby H. at 16m from Holly J.
MCLN Fury, at 20m
Avalanche, Stephanie D. at 24m from Anna F.
Avalanche, Kaitlyn F. at 47m
All three of those aspects of attacking soccer were on display today as the Avalanche closed out the Spring 2009 season the same way they closed out the Fall 2008 season--by beating the McLean Fury.

Goal 1 - Crossing to the Middle: A sweet, soft, lofted centering pass from Holly that brushed the outstretched fingertips of the keeper and fell to an onrushing Shelby who punished the back of the net with her strike.

Goal 2 - Following Shots: Reliable free kicker, Anna, clears the wall to a waiting keeper who should have made a simple pick up. But she didn't, and there was Steph, who never gave up on the play, to punch it home.

Goal 3 - Striking the Ball Hard: The iconic sight of Kaitlyn racing down the wing with a full head of steam is now the stuff of Avalanche lore. I still haven't quite figured out how she gets so much power and distance behind that ball. Neither has the Fury keeper.

The story of this game included a defense of Ashley, Anna, Goose, Dana, and Nicole that was challenged relentlessly yet hung together. It included a central midfielder, Sammy, who was pounded repeatedly, but stayed focused and intense. It included Alyssa, who did her best imitation of Kaitlyn more than once and got us out of the back when we desperately needed her to. And It included Tyla, Emily, Taylor, JPeg, and Allyson who each represent what is best in the Avalanche--maximization of their individual skills for the benefit of their team.

And, so, we are finished with another season. Another championship. Only one loss in our first two travel seasons. The brilliance of this Sunday morning a perfect canvas for the end of a shining year.

We made t-shirts to commemorate our achievements form this first year. After the girls are done wearing them, they should be folded neatly and stored in a place where lasting memories go. Each and every Avalanche earned the right to wear that shirt.

Yes, we move on to a new season and a new level of competition. Yes, we will add two more players to strengthen our team and to help us continue to be successful. But these memories of this first year, these feeling shared, will last forever. No matter what happens from here on out, I will always remember, love, cherish, and be proud of...

Sixteen girls. One team. Two championships.

Think snow!
