Fall 2009 - Game 1
Best Effort to Start Season

Previous Matches v CULP Comets
None
We were all anxious to get the season started. The schedule looked rough, but it was really hard to tell what the competition would be like. The division includes four teams from D1, the Avalanche, one team from D3, and 3 former WAGS team.

It was easy to guess that there would be no guaranteed wins, but a lot could have changed over the summer as teams reconfigured and players moved on to other teams. The Avalanche had never played a single team on the Fall 2009 season schedule, but who really knows without playing the matches?

After this first game, however, I think we have a real good idea of exactly what we are up against. The good news is that we now know we can be competitive--and we're going to have to be to stay in each game. The Avalanche, in fact, did stay in the game this time around, too, but couldn't get the one break available. That went to the Comets along with the victory.

Both keepers in light blue, Kaitlyn and Shelby, had outstanding games. They each made excellent saves including high balls, low balls and everything in between. Even on the only goal scored, Kaitlyn made the right decision to block the initial shot, but couldn't quite gather the rebound.

In a new position on defense, Sammy, helped keep the game close. She was supported by Goose, Anna, Jennie, and Dana--who was making her first return to action after being out of the lineup for a few weeks. The defensive unit had injury, absence, and inexperience to deal with but somehow hung tough.

The defense was back on its heels for much of the game as balls that used to clear easily are now being scooped up by our opponents and immediately brought back into attack. Midfielders Tyla, Caris, Shelby, and Emma did their best to keep this from happening, but it didn't help that the latter was injured early in the second half and done for the game.

The attack, obviously, did not have much success. But that is not to say they aren't trying to do their absolute best. Holly, Emily, Steph, Allyson, Taylor, and Alyssa relentlessly searched for ways to the net, but just didn't have any luck. They'll find it soon enough.

Ultimately, remaining competitive is the goal for this season. After this first game we saw just the kind of test it's going to be.

Think snow!
