Fall 2009 - Game 7
So Close
Previous Matches v PAC Blue Fury None |
As has been the case most of the season, the Avalanche entered this match as the underdog. After all, the PAC Blue Fury was near the top of the table, and the girls in light blue were all the way at the bottom. It would have been easy and understandable to lose this one without a fight.
| Summary - 11.3.09, 3:45pm | | Avalanche | 0 | 1 | 1 | | PAC Blue Fury | 1 | 1 | 2 | Captains: Alyssa H., Emily G. Game Balls: Ashley C., Alyssa H., Goose G. Goals: Ashley C. Assists: Anna F.

But our girls made a game out of it and truly had a chance to upset a stronger team. In fact, we had the run of play for the first ten minutes of the game with far more scoring opportunities than our opponents. Right away, we also reversed a disturbing trend of giving up far more corner kicks than we get.
As often happens in soccer and other sports, that early momentum did not quite result in scoring. And as also often happens, the first time the opponent gets a chance it goes in. On what seemed like PAC Blue Fury's first chance, a high-arcing cross from the left skimmed over Kaitlyn's outstretched hands and was punched in by an onrushing attacker. PAC Blue Fury, 1-0.
And still, the Avalanche didn't give up as the defense furiously prevented any further first half scoring. Ashley, Anna, Goose, Dana, Jennie, and Shelby all contributed to a stalwart effort against a team that was very good at moving the ball laterally and searching for ways to break through. They were denied time and again, and the first half ended satisfyingly close.
As the second half began, the Fury again put pressure on the defense. Even with support from central midfielders Emily, Tyla, and Caris the Fury attackers began proving why they are so highly rated. As outside midfielders Emma, Holly, and Alyssa continually chased the play gaps started to open up centrally.
Sure enough, a Fury striker was suddenly left alone a the eighteen and beautifully hit a looping shot that cleared Shelby's reach. PAC Blue Fury, 2-0.

Perhaps the best news of this match was the opportunities the Avalanche found in corner kicks. Sammy and Taylor were among the many who found themselves in front of the goal for good shots and even Ashley thundered one from the upper left side of the box that was only kept out by a terrific save.
And late in the game, a corner kick was just what the doctor ordered. After a mad scramble that looked like the keeper had it, then the Fury defense had it, and then we had multiple scoring chances, Ashley finally knocked it home. Now the lead was just one, but only a few minutes remained.
From that point on, the Avalanche went on a crazy rush to get the tying tally. They were close, too, for sure. But you have to hand it to the Fury who got the ball out of their end when they had to and held on for the win.
Think snow!
