Fall 2011 - Game 1
Hitting Us Where It Hurts

Previous Matches v NVSC Jr. Majestics 95 Blue
None
After two terrific pre-season tournaments, the Avalanche headed into their first WAGS match with a certain well-earned level of confidence. The new players had fit in nicely. Except for one game in the last five, the defense had been exceptional--and that game was against the best team we've ever faced by far. We had also shown the ability to score against strong opponents.

Yes, things were looking pretty good. But, as you all know, that's why they play the games. By the end of this one things were looking a lot less rosy for this young season.

Okay, we had an inclination that our good luck account was running low. After all, we had already lost Allyson for the season and we had a few other players hurting slightly. But at perhaps the one position where we could not afford to have an injury, we did just that. Midway through the second half (after toughing out an earlier shin-bashing) Kaitlyn--our stalwart keeper--when down with a bad knee.

In an instant the Avalanche season turned into a character builder.

And so our season changed in that instant. Perhaps it won't be long, but it isn't going to be quick either so we'll have to come up with big quantities of heart, determination, and guts to get through the next weeks.

Make no mistake, the NVSC Jr. Majestics 95 Blue was a worthy opponent. Even without our unfortunate break, we didn't have the team we needed to beat this one. Sammy and Holly did their best in the middle, but the royal-blue clad team was perfectly spaced and shut down virtually every thrust our girls made.

A well-coached squad like the Majestics was literally shredding the Avalanche defense with great through balls and crosses. Even when our keeper was healthy the attackers seemed to be coming at her from every direction. However, the quintet of Anna, Goose, Jennie, Danaand Erin kept the team in the game by turning away several good first half chances.

Although the final score doesn't show it, the Avalanche took the early lead on a beautiful feed from Anna to Jillian who beat the onrushing keeper with a beautifully placed ball. But that was basically all we could do in the offense department as Alyssa, Hailey, Steph and Danielle were completely bottled up.

So, where to from here? Well, you see what the injuries really turn out to be and you move forward. There is no time for pity or feeling sorry for ourselves. There is only time for trying and doing. You could easily lament our bad luck and give up on the season, but we're not going to do that. Not now. Not ever.

A few months from now I will look back with pride on this season. I don't know what our record will be. It could be winless and it could be much better than that. But I know that my team will play in a way that consistently impresses me, our families, and our opponents.

Injuries are part of the game. Setbacks are part of life. The things we do that are the hardest lead to the most growth.

Think snow!
