Fall 2011 - Game 9
Who Could Blame Them

Previous Matches v VYS Fusion
None
And so the season came down to one last match. The Avalanche still hadn't found that mark in the win column, and they had a single chance more.

Facing on old rival, the VYS Fusion, on their home turf field was not going to be easy especially since they were in the midst of an excellent season. Their results had them near the top of the table and deservedly so.

Despite the first two-goal outburst of the season for the Avalanche, both scored by Steph, it was immediately apparent that they were completely outmatched in this one, and fell 5-2, ending their season with a disappointing overall record. It was simply not meant to be this time around. In their third match of the weekend, the girls in light blue were simply done in. And who could blame them?

Okay, so I've used the words "outmatched" and "disappointing" in this story already, but those words don't come close to describing what this season was like. You can look at the standings and our results and our lack of goals, and then draw a conclusion that we were the worst team in WAGS Division 5. Enough of that.

I simply beg to differ.

For this season, I choose to measure the Avalanche from a completely different perspective. And that would be by the size of their individual and collective hearts.

Except for the first game and the last game, the Avalanche was in every match. There were some games they should have won, easily, and there were some where a tie was the gritty symbol of a heroic effort. Not once did I ever hear bickering or complaining that lasted more than a few seconds. They fought on the field yet retained a cohesiveness that could easily have dissolved out of shear frustration.

Would I exchange this season for one that had a few wins and few brighter moments? Sure. Why? Because I think these girls deserve something better than what they ended up with.

But, sometimes, your effort just doesn't result in a trophy or even a victory. Sometimes, the result is strength in character. The Avalanche girls may not realize it now, but they were strengthened by this demanding season. They've been through something about as tough as it gets in youth sports, and they came through alright.

It sure would have been nice to have Kaitlyn and Dana more often. Heck, it would have been great to have Allyson even for one match. But that was not the case, and the team dealt with those setbacks about as well as you could expect any team to do.

I'm proud of this team. Proud of their effort. Proud of their hearts. They did their very best.

Think snow!
